I'm not familiar enough with the issues involved in this so-called Online Freedom of Speech Act. What is it? Is it a way to protect the 1st Amendment rights of bloggers or a way to stifle free speech on the Internet? I couldn't figure that out from the link. Help me out here, please. I'm fasinated and terrified of Congress' reach into the 'net.
Basically this was to protect Bloggers etc from the limitations placed on special interest groups during election years etc. The Republicans really want to knock down the abilities of bloggers since so many are "liberal". While bloggers (including sites like the Daily Kos) argue they should have the same rights as the Fox News Netwok.
At least, that's as much as I understand from the blurbs I've been reading about it.
Thanks. So much activity regarding the Internet and sort of corralling its wild wild west activities--I hate the idea of politicizing progress. But on the other hand, I've been reading alot about the damage slanderous blogs can do to folks given the lack of checks and balances on the Web. You really have to know your facts to read blogs since there is no telling what totally false information will be published. And rumors and libel spread like wildfire without substantiation. That is why I like the wiki idea--so many eyeballs check for factual information that in the end, what is published is legitimized (or deleted).
I want to watch these blogs--I don't usually venture into political blog territory much.
Thanks for the info again. I learn so much from my flist.
The daily kos is a pretty good place to get some political news --- mostly focuses on legislative activity normally, though Katrina, Libby-gate, and Iraq also get a bit of play time. And they link frequently to many of the other well known political bloggers.
Liberal-ish slant, but not crazy al shapton-ish liberal. ;)
And all I can say is that it's how I get my news nowadays beyond general glances at nytimes/msnbc since I can't stand to watch news on TV anymore.
