Patients aren't shoppers

I found myself agreeing with this, despite the fact that as a person in research, I understand that advances take money. But perhaps its better if most of this money doesn't come from patients, but rather comes from taxes. Premier hospitals and centers like the Mayo Clinic could still compete and maintain their status by recruiting the best of the best physicians and surgeons. But the elderly and poor would stop having to choose between food or healthcare.

I don't really know what the solution is as I do know that more government run programs like Canada and UK do have their flaws. But currently, the market-force way isn't serving the customer and patient as it should.
