Heee, the thing I love about new fandoms is stumbling across good fic and not really evaluating it as I read. A grace period if you will as I'm desperate for more of a 'verse enough to stuff my literary snob back down inside my brain. Not to say that this is bad or anything, it's good, it's insightful, and even better, it's imaginative.
And quite possibly the best use of a quote from Faith I've seen (course, that's been what, 3 weeks. That's your challenge SN writers, (fanfic and RL both), make me say that more often and mean it).
Anyway, without further ado:

... particularly after Dean got "knocked out by a ninety-pound girl? That's totally channelling him into the Jayne role. And the combination of Sam astonishingly knowing River's safe words, and then spiriting her away from the bar, and the manacles, and then bandaging her up... totally a combination of Mal and Simon's behavior straight from Serenity.
Admittedly, the narrative drifts far from that towards the end, but it was the initial characterization that made me think of that connection. And towards the end?
“I guess you already know what I’m going to say.”
River shrugged, glancing back up at him. “I like to hear you say it.”
Completely Mal. Although admittedly Mal didn't confess his love for River so much in the following instant, but... : )

Date: 2006-01-28 10:12 am (UTC)Although I thought the tie-in with Cleveland was a nice touch, there at the end. You know, because of the whole end-of-Buffy "there's a Hellmouth in Cleveland" thing, and the substantial amount of Buffy-verse fic in Cleveland that I've read since then. : )
